Today we are creating a world of Spooky Ghosts!

We started out with a piece of white paper.

We drew what a ghost shape might be.

Then we used our hands and fine-motor skills

to tear the paper around our drawn line.

We made sure to go extra slow so that we didn't tear our paper in to two pieces.

Boo! And there is our torn paper ghost!

We decided to give him a face so we glued on goggly eyes...

and finger painted a black mouth.

Ohhhh, ohhhh! There he/she is! Our Spoooooky Ghost!

NIKE WOMEN'S MARATHON

A Run to Benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society 2011

4 years ago, last weekend, I ran this very race, my first half marathon! I wanted to get into shape, after having, at the time, a 3 year old. The weekend of the run we entered into Union Square and there were thousands of names on the NIKE Wall of all of the women running the race and even more names listed on another wall for those whom these women were running for. My friend's dad had Lymphoma so I decided, that day, that I would run in support of

Larry Vaughn; whom today rests in peace.

My husband was there supporting me with coffee and a bagel in hand, and a lump on his jaw line, to greet me at the finish line! We were told the lump was most likely a clogged salivary gland and to eat hard candy. Fast forward two months, after antibiotics and surgery, we received the diagnosis that it is stage 3 Lymphoma. A treatable kind of Lymphoma, but not a curable one. WOW! I thought, "I just ran THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL RUN all for my husband, without even knowing it."

Today, not a year goes by, that I haven't registered for this run!

In celebration of my 4th year running and my blog coming to life,

I now am able to share my story and pictures with you!

CHEERS to LIFE!

Where is the time going??? It has been a week since I have connected with my fellow educators outside of LSU and it feels as though all I have done is just blink. I logged in tonight and read this heart felt post from the inspirational Deborah J. Stewart @Teach_Preschool, "Early childhood is like fall - a season filled with wonder, and beauty, and change that rushes by all too quickly." And I realized at that moment I wasn’t alone in my thoughts. (Another reason I love to blog.) Our days in the classroom have been filled with wonder and exploration and we are so excited to share what we have been learning with you soon! Thank you, Deborah, for always being there!

We talked all about the letter and sounds of the Letter I/i

We also talked about shapes, colors and numbers.

We glued on our 3 green circles.

Then we cave our Inchworn a face!

And here is our masterpiece!

This activity can be used as a TLC Inspired Activity.

Use 3-3x3 green squares.

Cut all 4 corners and give them baby haircuts.

You can sing,

"Give it a baby haircut, give it a baby haircut,

give it a baby haircut to make a circle."

Then follow this activity from the top.

Creating Ice Cream Cones

It is "I" week @ LSU

and we are creating Ice Cream Cones

(CONE 4.5x6 brown; ICE CREAM 4.5x6 any color)

We folded our 6x4.5 brown paper in half horizontally.

Then we cut diagonally to create our cone.

We folded our 4.5x6 colored paper vertically and cut off one of one corner.

The we gave the edges of the corner a baby haircut.

While we cut se sing,

"Give it a baby haircut, give it a baby hair cut,

give it a baby haircut to make an Ice Cream!"

Then we took the bottom of the paper and tore down toward the folded center.

We then glued our cone onto our background.

Then we glued our Ice Cream 'on top' of our cone.

We added glue to our Ice Cream...

So that our sugar (glitter) would stick.

And here is our masterpiece!

Exploring Ice

and we are Exploring Ice!

We froze water in Tuperware containers overnight.

We touched the ice and talked about how it felt,

"cold, smooth, hard, slippery, wet, etc..."

Then we added salt to our Ice and watched how it began to change form.

We noticed, "holes, cracks, grooves, lines, scratches, etc..."

We added food coloring to the top and watched it dribble

down the cracks and lines of the broken ice.

We then held the ice under running water

and watched it change shape even more.

The water created larger holes and cracks.

We continued to play with it as it melted in our hands.

We had so much fun exploring Ice today!!

We talked about shapes, colors and function of each color

of lights on a traffic light.

Then we glued on our colors while we chanted:

"Red says stop; yellow says slow, and green says go, go, go!"

And here is our finished project!

We ended with a game of Red Light, Green Light!

We predicted if an egg sinks or floats.

4 out of 9 of our friends said an egg would float.

So we tested out our predictions and discovered that an egg actually sinks.

Then, we used our senses as we were asked what an egg:

It is F week @ LSU and we are cutting shapes
and gluing to build us FIretrucks!

(needed: 11x9 blue; 3x9 red; 1.5x3 red; 2x4 black; 12x.5 yellow; 4x.25 yellow)

1st we shook our 3x9 red rectangle and glued it across our paper.

Then we took our 1.5x3 folded in half to create a square and cut out the center with an L shape and glued it on.

Next, we took our 2x4 black rectangle and folded it in half to create a square. We cut the corners and gave it a baby haircut to form a circle. We glued on our wheels.

Then we took our 12x.5 yellow and folded it half cutting off the seam. We magically had 2 rectangles that were 6x.5 for the top and bottom of the long ladder.

We glued on our ladder.

Finally, we cut our 4x.25 rectangle into 4 pieces and glued creating the steps of our ladder.

And here is our FIRETRUCK!

It is F week @ LSU and we are painting fish!

Our class decided on using orange to create "goldfish!"

Our teacher helped us pick up our fish and flip it over onto the paper. (the reason we didn't place the paper over the fish was so we wouldn't crinkle the paper)

We pressed our hands down on the fish, all over the fish.

Look at the details! Once the paint dried we ran our fingers over our fish to feel the scales.

And here is our finished product!

E is for Erasers in our Sensory Tub

We added erasers of different shapes and colors to our colorful pasta for loads of fun!

We also added cups and tubes for pouring.

Let's Color Us Some Pasta!

We have used this plain colored macaroni pasta in many of our sensory bins and wanted to add some color. We were inspired byToddlerTeachingThemes.com at http://toddlerteachingthemes.com/macaroni-necklaces/ where they use hand sanitizer to make the colors more vibrant. We had read this before, but were not sure of the ratios.

So we divided up our pasta into 4 ziplock baggies as we were using 4 neon colors.

We had at least 4 cups of pasta per bag so we added 20 squirts of hand sanitizer.

We then added color with the ratios from ToddlerTeachingThemes but decided we needed more color. I'd say we added ~30 pinches of color. (remember we had 4 cups of pasta so your ratio for 1 cup is roughly 5 squirts hand sanitizer and 6 squeezes of color.)

The kids loved mixing the bags.

And here are our bags after about 10 minutes of mixing.

We laid our pasta out to dry on cookie sheets.

After the pasta was completely dry, we added it to our sensory bin.

The kids couldn't get enough! We had so much fun!

We also colored rice following the same direction as above.

Today we placed our Orbeez beads into a sensory box and added water.

Instantly they began to expand and grow.

We put the lid on and came back an hour later
and this is what we saw...

Almost an optical illusion where the beads laid under the water level

giving them an iridescent look.

2 hours later we checked again and our beads were full with water.

So fun to touch and feel.

We can't wait to see what they will look like tomorrow...

Smokey the Smoke Detecor

This week we are learning all about Fire Safety!

We talked about Fire Detectors and how they help us.

So we decided to create our very own!

We took a Paper Plate and added googly eyes and a red nose.

Then we finished him off with a mouth so he can yell, "BEEP"

to warn us of fire!

We attached this song to his back....

ALWAYS ALERT

I am a smoke detector and I say, “Beep!”

(squat down)

I’m your nose when you’re asleep.

(point to nose then pretend to sleep)

If there is a fire and smoke is all around,

(wiggle hands and fingers around)

I’ll wake you up with a very loud sound…

(jump up and raise your hands high)
